Vanity…oh so NOT COOL!

The bible has a lot to say about “Vanity”. Not a vanity in the sense of the mirror feature in your bathroom but in the sense of pride or worthlessness. I looked up the definition of vanity in Webster’s dictionary and its defined as:
1.Excessive pride in one’s appearance or accomplishments; conceit.
or
2. Lack of usefulness, worth, or effect; worthlessness.
a. Something that is vain, futile, or worthless.
b. Something about which one is vain or conceited.
Also, Proverbs chapter 31 vs. 30(KJV) states,
-“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.”
Although I fully understand the need and desire to look your best in every way because I shout from the roof tops, “spirit, soul & BODY!” but we have to have our priorities in the right perspective and see things the way our father God see’s things. Know that any amount of vanity, however harmless it may seem, will lead to full blown excessive PRIDE if left unchecked. In the book of Proverbs, chapter 6, verse 16-19, it describes the 6 things God hate and the 7 that are abominable to him. You’ll see there that a “proud look” is at the top of that list. Know and understand that pride is not good in the eyesight of the Lord.

In 1 Timothy 4:8(ESV), it states,

-“For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”
We can buy all of the latest hair trends, products, fashion, fitness DVD, you name it but if we don’t invest just as much or MORE time focusing on the beautifying of our spirit and soul, its VANITY!!!
In Eccesiastes 4:4 (ESV), it states,
-“Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.”
Unfortunately, we often struggle to look like someone else or to quote on quote “keep up with the Jones”. How often do you see your favorite entertainer wear a certain designer item and go run out to purchase that item or needless to say, a replica? It’s vanity or worthless to toil, struggle and work after worthless things because we envy what we see someone else with. Envy is a work of the flesh in itself toiling in this fashion is so VAIN!
I’m writing this posting because I’m tired of seeing so many beautiful women and young ladies working overtime and emptying themselves in order to keep up with the latest of hair, trends, fashion and beauty products and invest no time into their walk with the Lord. Some wonder why they are not experiencing fullness in life. All of these physical things will pass away but only the inner beauty of a person will last eternally.
One of my favorite scriptures is 1 Peter 3: 3-5 and it states, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.  For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves.”
This should be what women of God focus the MAJORITY of our time on. I KNOW that God is concerned about our outer and physical beauty because there is a wealth of scriptures about its importance to Him. On the other hand, it’s vanity or worthless in the long run when compared to the deeper things of God.
I challenge all of you to make a conscious decision today to start living life, dedicated to making your spiritual growth a major priority. Put the things of God and your walk with Him first and see how you grow!! Let me know if your “up” for the challenge. You can also notate what changes you see. Don’t get me wrong, the Devil, that old serpent will try his best to persuade and trick you to get you off course but greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world!
You can do it! For more practical steps to achieving your spiritual goals, contact me or the Spirit and Soul pages of B.A.D.
